The weather in Orihuela. Spain was 30 degrees with a headwind .This did not deter the group of Irish athletes that attended the force spring camp.
Sessions are twice daily at the track and gym including hill sessions and pilates on the beach.
Today the group where training on Torrevieja track doing a plyometrics session which included depth jumps and bounds up steps for two minutes.
From the girls group Nicole Martin and Lydia Jean were especially good at getting the rhythm up the steps, helping them with their dynamic take offs. Nicole who is based in Loughborough University but also still runs for Dromore A.C in Co.Down speacialises in the 100m and 200m. She Recently got second with a P.B in the 60m at loughborough Open meeting in Febuary. Lydia Jean is a discus thrower who won third in the Discus All-Irelands in 2009.
The boys in the group were really pushed by the top masters athlete, Liam Lester from Blackrock in Dublin who once ran 23.3 seconds for the 200m when he was twenty-four.The gym workouts included maximum strength some days and light weights for strength endurance for other athletes what was a real challange for the younger athletes was the chin ups and dips.
The youngest athlete Patrick Mc ardle from Ravensdale mainly a rugby player for Dundalk showed great enthusiasm for gaining new knowledge in athletics both in the gym and in all the track and field events. The group enjoyed hip hop dancing and gymnastics in the evening, which are a great assesst to the athletes for improving agility, mobility, co-ordination and rhythm which in turn all help with improving speed.
Rory KIrwin from Dunleer is the All Ireland under 18 and 19 and schools Javelin champion with a Personal best of almost 55 metres. He won the All Star Leinster award for Louth in Carlow in 2010. Rory is a personal trainer and Gym insdtructor in Dunleer Gym teaching circuits to up and coming athletes and the general public. Rory is heading to Jordanstown University this year and hopes to combine his sports and studies to greater effect. Rory said he learned alot of new drills stretches and coaching techniques from Geraldine who has 28 years experience as a coach under the great DR Zbgniew Orywal National coach of Poland and Ireland.
